I Learned To Wire Wrap and It Was Really Good Therapy For Me
Cindy Munguia, Williams, Arizona

Tell us your story.

I've done lapidary for years, then I became disabled and suffer from chronic depression. I moved to Arizona and joined the Flagstaff Gem & Mineral Society. I learned to wire wrap and it was really good therapy for me. It kept me busy and I developed a lot of pride in what I was accomplishing.

Where do you sell your jewelry? Do you have any tips on selling there?

I started selling my jewelry at smaller arts & craft shows within about a 50 mile radius of Flagstaff. People picked up my cards and I offered custom service. They could pick out a stone that I had cut and polished and I would wire wrap it for them.

What's your biggest selling piece and why?

The unique stones I offer and the history of where they come from helps my sales. Honestly telling them of the compliments they will get and the fact that they won't find this kind of jewelry in a common jewelry store.

What one piece of advice can you give to other aspiring jewelry makers?

Don't expect perfection right away. Practice, practice, practice and don't be shy to tell your customers that you're still learning.

Have you quit your day job yet? Can you give us any idea how much income your jewelry is making?

This is my only business. I'm on Social Security and this gives me extra spending money.

What would you say to someone that might be hesitant to invest in Preston's course?

I wouldn't hesitate. The more ideas you can get, the better in order to find out what you're really good at.

Has jewelry making changed your life in any way?

Yes. I love people admiring my work and I am hoping to build it up substantially.

Do you sell any of your work on line or on Ebay? Do you do well there?

I sold on eBay, but the fees were more than my sales. I found more exposure and sales on The Hand Crafted Jewelry Mall I found on Preston's website.

What's your plan for the future?

Keep on trying new things, different gauge wire, different material (such as copper). Buy more of Preston's videos. Try to work more shows.
